5 Tips for Loving Life, Whatever the Weather

While the Northern Hemisphere bathes in Summer warmth, south of the Equator, the temperature’s falling like winter rain on the cold, cold ground.

Baby it’s cold outside…and probably inside too, particularly if you live in a house built for Summer.  But it IS possible to enjoy winter.  Here are five ways to help you find your joy in the cold, I’m sure you can think of more to add to this list:

1. Pull you boots up

Remember those amazing boots you bought at the end of last season?  Get them out and wear them as much as possible.  There’s only a few months in which you can reasonably wear them, so enjoy them now.  Knee high tan boots are my pick and they add instant polish to an everyday item like jeans.

2.  Love your Locks

I don’t know about you, but my natural waves, à la Farrah Fawcett of Charlie’s Angels fame, can be tamed with a straightening iron during winter.  The lack of humidity makes my five minutes maximum hair styling routine so much easier.

3. Faux Fur

We’ve been seeing faux fur vests and scarves in the shops for a while.  Everything is on sale now, so buy something deliciously soft and wear it often because by Spring it will be in hidden in the top out-of-reach heights of your wardrobe.

And as a warning, be prepared to be hugged by a stranger if you’re looking particularly snugly.

4. Don’t complain about the cold weather.

Think of those cold nights and crisp mornings as if you were on a mini break in Europe, without having to leave home and with the added benefit of actual sunshine.  Sunshine on a winter’s day, what joy.

5.  Build a fire-pit

Most of our houses don’t have open fireplaces, they’re more the domain of  a mountain-side country lodge.  But think of how civilised an afternoon would be spent with friends sitting around a fire pit or brazier in your backyard.  There aren’t many months of the year that sitting by the fire would be at all inviting in Queensland, but now is the time.

Check the fire regulations in your area.

There is much to be thankful for even when it’s cold.  If all else fails, find a heated pool and have a swim or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach.  Just remember to be nice to all of those tourists from colder climates who are here to enjoy our glorious sunshine.
